Spotlight shines on Patti Lacy

Let me introduce today's spotlighted author Patti Lacy.
She is a very interesting lady and has already proven herself to be a great writer. Her first novel An Irish Woman's Tale is one that stayed with me well after I had finished the book.

Patti, tell us a little about yourself.

In 1955, I was born in the back seat of a Buick parked in the middle of a street in Waco, Texas, and have somehow ended up in Normal, Illinois! After college and marriage, I followed a family passion to call “the little red schoolhouse” my office. Then things got crazy when I put away my roll book, picked up a court reporter’s steno machine, and juggled a new job with motherhood. After my babies flew from the nest, The Spirit urged me to write a story I heard in 1995, when our family moved to Indiana. Since 2005, I’ve been writing novels about the secrets women keep and why they keep them

I have been to Waco, Texas but not to Normal, Illinois. What a crazy adventure!

Please tell us a little about Bayou Saw.
Sally Stevens, the chatty Southerner who unearths Mary’s past in An Irishwoman’s Tale, has her own burial ground for secrets: the slimy mud of a Louisiana bayou. When memories of segregation, a blood oath, and a chain link fence bubble to the surface, Sally must face the truth—or risk destroying her family and herself. Kregel Publications will release What the Bayou Saw on April 30, 2009.

Where can readers find you on the Web?

What is the craziest thing you have ever done?

That’s the beautiful thing about living under the Spirit’s power! Every day becomes a patchwork quilt of adventures! Last summer, me and Sue, a good friend, darted across the street and zigzagged through spray spurting from golf course sprinklers just to enjoy the gift of water. Last week a woman who sat near me and a friend at a local coffeehouse overheard our God Talk and started asking questions. Today that virtual stranger and I are having coffee at 9:00. I call that God Crazy and think Him for it constantly.

What is your favorite children’s book?
That’s like asking Imelda Marcos to choose her favorite pair of shoes! I’ll say Beautiful Joe since I used this heartrending story narrated by a dog in my latest work in progress. I also devoured The Illustrated Children’s Bible, Nancy Drew mysteries, Pippi Longstocking, Black Beauty…Stop, Patti. Stop!!!

What book are you reading now? What books are found lying around your home?
Ooh, dear Donna, you’re talking to a girl who grew up with books in the bathroom cabinets instead of toilet paper and towels. Books constantly attempt to seize every room of our Normal home. They creep onto tables, under beds, into closets. I’ve even found one or two in my bathroom!

I’m itching to read The Shape of Mercy by Susan Meissner, The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb, and The Madonnas of Leningrad by Debra Dean. Oh, those crisp new pages are calling, but first I must finish a poignant manuscript by my friend Melanie Dobson that I can hardly put down to do my own work. Look for it soon in stores everywhere, including WalMart!

It sounds like you have been peeking in my bathroom cabinets. My wonderful husband just gave up a wall in the garage to build me book shelves to store all that have outgrown the other shelves.

What are you working on next?
The ink is still damp on My Name is Sheba, my latest work in progress. Whoopee! It feels so good to write that last word, doesn’t it?

Since last summer, when Xiu Wang became a soul sister and I roomed with Millie Samuelson at ACFW in Minnesota, my mind has been held captive by riveting tales of China. Here’s my current hook: Xiu Lu, a Harvard-educated physician, seeks U.S. citizenship not for the usual reasons of freedom and opportunity, but to reconnect with the daughter she threw to the river gods from the banks of the Yangtze.

Yes, my passport is updated! China, here I come!

Let’s pretend money is not a factor, if you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Um, China! The travel bug has bitten as has the bookworm (do worms bite?!) If God allows, my husband and I would like to sail the Greek islands and the canals of Venice, hike the Canadian Rockies, and revisit some unforgettable places like the Washington State Islands, Vancouver, and Switzerland, home of my brother Bucky.

I think I need to write a book with a setting in some wonderful place so I can travel too.

What do you find most challenging about writing?
The money side of the business. Just give me a room of my own, a library card, a hooked-up computer and a nearby coffee shop, the whisperings of the Spirit, and I can soar on wings like eagles. (Okay, the coffee shop is probably not a must.) Sigh…those things cost $$. Back to the problem…

I can see that as a real issue but are you sure the coffee shop isn't a must?

What is your favorite verse from the Bible? Why?
Romans 8:28: And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

Oh, dear sisters, I struggled so with the concept of God allowing bad things to happen. When I saw God using negative circumstances in my life and in the lives of my friends, the hierarchy of God’s sovereignty clicked into place in my muddled brain. As I write my stories, this verse resonates with the troubled characters who must turn “all things” to God. Including that lying habit. Including that rape. Including that abandonment.

This is a wonderful verse. At times it is hard to accept that all things work for the good.

I always am trying to learn new ways to be organized in the office, what is your favorite organizational tool?
Ooh, sounds like I have a new scatterbrained friend! Every New Year’s I buy a leather-bound Day Planner and carry it everywhere, along with my tattered Bible (okay, sometimes I use a sleek portable version.) Then I keep my schedule posted on my website and do my best to update. Otherwise my office is a whirlwind of CDs, letters, names and story snippets scribbled on unused deposit slips, business cards, half-empty cups of coffee, piles of books, candles…If I could get my camera to work, I’d attach a visual.

Oh, I can be your new scatterbrained friend! I carry the Day Planner too but I must confess it doesn't help if you misplace it. I do think you have been peeking and rummaging through my house. You just described my office perfectly.

What would you like readers to say about your writing?
That crazy woman sure can tell a story about broken women who God puts back together.

I loved your first novel and look forward to reading this one as soon as I get my hands on it.

Donna, you are a lovely hostess! Thanks for this wonderful opportunity!
Blessings to all,
Patti

Tell us a little about yourself

I’m a stay-at-home mom with a husband, three kids, six jobs, and a writing addiction! To be truthful, I’m not sure when all of this happened and it hasn’t at all gone the way I had thought it would, but I totally love where I am right now. On the six jobs part, as any stay-at-home mom will tell you (and any MOM for that matter), there are endless jobs to be done around here… laundry, cleaning, family finances, purchasing, etc. I am also the CFO for my husband’s construction business which keeps me busy. And I write and publish and own my own publishing company… which keeps me sane.

WOW!! You are a really busy lady.

What is your novel about ?

My current novel is called “Reunion.” It is the sequel to “Dreams by Starlight” which came out last year. “Dreams” is the story of Camille Wright, a shy studious high school senior who prefers books to people, and Jaylon Quinn, the star of the stage in high school who is living a role he hates but can’t seem to break out of. When the two of them come together in “Dreams,” they help each other break out of who they think they have to be into who they really are. However, part of learning who really you are means making decisions for where you want to go in life, and Camille and Jaylon’s dreams after high school lead them in different directions. “Reunion” is the story of them finding each other again after ten years. However, he’s now engaged to someone else, and she’s knee-deep in building a billion dollar fighter plane.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done?

The craziest thing I’ve ever done is to decide to follow the Holy Spirit. That single decision has led me down more insane paths than I can even count. On any given day you can hear me say, “Okay, Holy Spirit, where are we going with this?” at least once and often multiple times.

As a former and recovering control-freak, not knowing where I’m going and how I’m going to get there is like a never-ending spiritual and emotional roller coaster. I never know what’s coming next or what He is going to want to do through me. It may be talking with someone and being completely honest (in ways I would have shied away from being before). It may be in writing as there have been many times I have written things that made NO SENSE at the time and it wasn’t until the book was finished that I understood the seeds He was planting all the way back at the beginning. Let me tell you, that’s something of an emotional high-wire act.

This Holy Spirit ride is one I’m not sure I would ever have gotten on voluntarily when I was in my deepest control-freak era, but it has been the coolest thing I have ever done!

I think that is one of the best answers I have gotten to that question!

Beside salvation, what is the best gift you have ever received?

The gift of being me. For years, I was not me. Okay, maybe I should say I didn’t know who I really was. My life and decisions were based upon what everyone else wanted me to be. I worked and worked and worked to please them but often felt empty inside. I was lost and alone and afraid most of the time. And then God got ahold of me. I think it had something to do with my saying I trusted Him, and He took me at my word (which I’m not sure I even comprehended what I meant at the time I said it). I have been a Christian all my life, so my getting into Heaven was not the question. It was more the hell I was living in while on earth that God chose to save me from. He literally saved me from me, and there aren’t enough words in all the languages in the world to say THANKS for that!

Isn't it amazing how we can know who Christ is all of our lives but we don't know Him. It is the relationship that transforms us.

What is your favorite children’s book?

When I was a very little girl, I stayed with my grandmother because my mom worked. At noon Grandma and I would lay down for a nap, and I got to choose the book. Now, Grandma had lots of books to choose from, but on most days one of the books we read was CINDERELLA. There was just something about that girl who everyone overlooked but one prince saw her for the good person she was that just… UGH. Got me right in the heart. My poor Grandmother probably had that book memorized forwards and backwards, but interestingly, it’s 35 years later, and I’m still finding ways to tell that story over and over and over again—just with different characters.

That is one of my daughters favorites too. I love that it is retold so often with new twist. It is a timeless story.

What do you find most rewarding?

Hands down, the most rewarding thing about writing is getting to connect with readers on a deeper level. Because of the way the stories touch them, my readers often have a peace about sharing their deepest selves with me… even before we’ve really become friends. I love hearing about how this character or that book made them see life differently. I love to watch their eyes and listen to them talk about the story that touched them so deeply. It is a deep honor to me that God would use my fingers to write His stories so that His children can come just a little closer to Him in the process of reading. I’ve seen lives healed by the stories He’s written through me. I’ve seen flowers bloom… from people who were afraid to share what God has given them, to opening up to let their lights shine in our darkened world. I cannot put into words what witnessing God work through me has been like, but it is definitely the most rewarding thing about writing.

What are you working on next?

Well, true to the Holy Spirit’s “we never do anything the same way twice” theory… coming up I’ve got two very different projects. One is a novel that I’m really excited about. After having written 25 novels, people often ask me which is my favorite, and although I could make a case for every single one because of something it taught me, I think this one coming up is the one that comes to mind most forcefully when I have to answer that question. It’s called, “To Protect & Serve.” It follows the lives of a fireman and a workaholic ad agent who is pretty sure the world would stop if she did. This one was a real challenge to write because of the rescue scenes in it, but the Holy Spirit did some awesome work because I had a friend who is a fire-fighter to read it and he called so angry he was probably spitting nails. “What were you thinking putting yourself in that kind of danger?” I was like, “Huh?” He said, “You do not need to be anywhere NEAR a fire.”

Of course I laughed about that because the truth is, I’m desperately afraid of fire. I have a hard time lighting the candles on a cake. So I said, “What are you talking about? I’ve never been to a fire.” And he simply couldn’t believe it. He said, “I don’t know how you did it because that is exactly what it’s like for the firemen.” My theory is the Holy Spirit has been in countless fires with the fire fighters and knew exactly how it is.

The second project which may come out before or after the novel (I never know exactly WHERE we’re going with these things) is a non-fiction called, “Being God Positive in a Spirit Draining World.” This book came out of nowhere for me. One day all of a sudden the Holy Spirit said, “We’re going to write this book about all these principles that the characters live only it’s going to be about how YOU came to Me.” Lovely. (Did I mention something about high-wire walking?)

Very soon I’m going to put that whole book up in pdf form through the God Positive Blog for readers to give me feedback because I want to see if it even makes sense to anyone other than me!
Both of those sound really interesting . I'll stop by the blog and checkit out.

If your book was being discussed at a book club what do you think the focus of the discussion would be on?

The lesson of learning to be yourself and not letting everyone else’s opinions determine your worth. In “Reunion” Camille is working herself silly to please everyone else (hmm… this sounds familiar). She has this idea that others’ opinions of her are based on what she DOES rather than who she IS. Her life revolves around “topping the last project.” And let’s face it, when the present project is a billion dollar airplane, topping that might just be a bit difficult. As for Jaylon, he’s gotten himself into a mess because he never listens to his truest heart. He only listens to the world—what the world says he should want and do and be. Trust me, these two need each other desperately!

I always am trying to learn new ways to be organized in the office, what is your favorite organizational tool? I'm going to keep on asking this question until my office gets organized.
My office is a disaster, so we’re not going to talk about that.

But the best WRITING
organizational tool I’ve found is making a calendar for each book. I write five or six books at a time (don’t ask! It’s that Holy Spirit high wire thing again). So to put one down and pick another up can get very confusing because the timeline is so important to each one. So when I start a new book, I make a very simple calendar on my computer. (Seven columns, 25 or so rows) Then I fill out the calendar with the dates from the start date as far as I can. As I write, I put notations in the calendar—it may be on what day something happened (Maggie starts the job). Or it may be something that I want to happen later on in the story (The Scholarship Competition). As I write, I highlight what I’ve already written in red. That way I can just survey the calendar, and I know where I am and where I’m going. It also helps so that December in the book coincides with December when I write “Six months later…”

All I can say is Wow! I'm good at trying to write one at a time.

What are your pet peeves in the writing industry?

The thing that frustrates me most is the philosophy that everyone’s writing has to fit in this little box to be considered “good enough.” The truth is that God never did it the same way twice in the Bible. Seriously. Look it up and see for yourself. Jesus healed the sight of several blind men, but He never did it the same way twice. One, He put mud on eyes and told him to go wash. Another, He skipped the mud and just told him to go wash. Another, He touched his eyes. Another, He said, “Your faith has healed you” without touching anything. If you make a study of how Jesus worked, what you will see MOST is great variety. In fact, to see how much God loves variety, all you have to do is go look in your garden. If all the flowers were the same—same color, same type, same size, it might be beautiful, but it would be no match for a garden with variety. Some hang, some crawl, some are bushes, some on single stems, some are blue, some pink, some white, some are big, some are small… But I’ll be you can’t find two that are just alike.

It is the same way with writing (not should be… IS!). We each bring our own style, color, awareness, experience to the table, and then in a completely worldly way, we are told, “No. To be published, you have to write like THIS.” Sorry. God doesn’t work that way. It’s the WORLD that’s telling us we can’t… we can’t write like that, we can’t write that, we can’t be who God made us to be, we can’t write the stories He’s given us to write.

We’ve been conned into believing we have to become someone else before we are good enough to be published (and thus successful and happy). It’s not true. That makes me both incredibly sad and incredibly angry. And it is, I believe, one of the main reasons the Holy Spirit led me to first publish my own books and then to publish others who don’t fit in some neat, tidy, ready-made box.

What is your favorite verse from the Bible? Why?

“And the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13 Just start at the top and go down that whole chapter. If you are doing this—either writing or living—for some other reason than love, you are a noisy gong, a clanging cymbal. We were meant to be God’s clarions for each other, but that doesn’t start with craft or voice. It starts with your heart.
Is your heart in the right place? I don’t mean just doing this FOR God… that’s a great way to end up in misery. I mean letting God do it THROUGH you—HIS way. Letting Him make the decisions about what you write and how you write it. I mean letting God choose your path to publication and most especially after publication.

As writers, we get this crazy idea that publication is some utopia, that if we could just get THERE, then everything else would fall into place. It’s a lie that Satan holds out to us that entices us to destroy the precious gift God has put in our hearts. We work, we hone, we change… everything about our writing to make someone else happy.
We listen to critique groups and editors and workshop presenters. We change this and that. We call it working on craft, but too often it turns into stuffing ourselves into boxes that we were never meant to be in.

God has a plan for EACH of us, and each plan is different. On the other hand, Satan’s plan is the same for each one of us—to discourage us, to make us hate and doubt what we’re doing, to sideline us, to steal the dreams from our hearts, and then to destroy us. If any of that describes your life or your writing journey, it’s time to STOP going down that path, go back to 1 Corinthians 13, and start over from a place of love. That’s where God wants you.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Ha. Ha. See my above answer! ;)

On Ebooks

One of the bends in the road that the Holy Spirit has taken me on was in the area of publishing e-books. I don’t know how many of you are familiar with this type of publication, but many readers are waking up to the fact that digitally produced material is convenient and doesn’t require extensive shelf space! My newest books are available as downloads as well as in print, but prior to this incarnation of my career, I did cyber-serials for awhile with my newsletter. I would put out two chapters a month of a story for all those on my newsletter. Afterward, I found there was a market for the entire e-books, so I made those available on my website (on the Bookshelf page at: http://www.stacistallings.com/)

Currently, I’m running a special promotion through Spirit Light Books (at http://www.spiritlightbooks.com/) where if you sign up to be a subscriber to the blog, you will get an entire e-book (Deep in the Heart) sent to you for free. This is one of my books that I dearly love but that didn’t really fit into a good space to publish. So, rather than let it sit on my computer gathering dust, I decided to let readers who might not be familiar with e-books and blogs have a great reason to check them out. Plus, if you’ve never read a Staci Stallings book, you get to find out for free what you’ve been missing. Who can beat that deal these days?

Where can readers find you on the Web?

Several places:
http://www.stacistallings.com/ is my main author site
http://www.spiritlightbooks.com/ is my publishing site
http://spiritlightbooks.wordpress.com/ is the Spirit Light Books blog site
http://godpositive.wordpress.com/ is the blog site for my up-coming book “Being God Positive in a Spirit Draining World”

I want to thank Donna for inviting me over for this interview. It’s been great fun!
This week everyones a winner just go over to www.spiritlightbooks.com and signup to subscribe to the blog and you get an entire e-book. I would still love to hear from you so be sure to leave a comment telling me if you have ever read an e-book.

Spotlight shines on Margaret Daley

Margaret Daley is an award winning, multi-published author in the romance genre. One of her romantic suspense books, Hearts on the Line, won the American Christian Fiction Writers’ Book of the Year Contest in 2007. In 2008 she placed second in the Short Contemporary category for the Book of the Year Contest for Heart of the Family. She wrote for various secular publishers before the Lord led her to the Christian romance market. She currently writes inspirational romance and romantic suspense books for the Steeple Hill Love Inspired lines. She has sold sixty-four books to date.

Here's a little about Poisoned Secrets, her new novel.
Poisoned Secrets, March 2009, Love Inspired Suspense
Maggie Ridgeway has spent years searching for her birth mother. And now, thanks to an anonymous tip, she's finally found her. Taking the apartment across the hall from her mother's family, Maggie is determined not to leave until she gets some questions answered. Who is her father? Why did her parents abandon her? And what item in her new apartment is provoking multiple burglaries? After an interrupted break-in leaves Maggie unconscious, the building's owner, Kane McDowell, promises to protect her. But then he learns who she really is. When the past is unveiled, the shocking disclosures could tear Maggie and Kane apart.

Margaret Daley has offered to give away a copy of her novel. If you would like to win a copy of this be sure to follow the directions at the end of this post. I will be picking a winner on March 20th.

Let's get to know Margaret a little better.

Who is the most important influence in your life besides God?

My mother was a wonderful example of a woman who cared about others. She gave so much of herself and loved the Lord.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

All the waiting you have to do in this business. I have so many stories I want to write and it takes time to do them.

I know what you mean. It is a business that doesn't rush.

What are you working on next?

I am working on a Christmas novella for this December. I will be with Debby Giusti in Christmas Peril, a Love Inspired Suspense. My story will be titled Merry Mayhem. It takes place in Christmas, Oklahoma where things aren’t what they appear to be.

If your book was being discussed at a book club what do you think the focus on the discussion would be?

Probably about keeping secrets and what happens when they come out—because they usually come out.

What are your pet peeves in the writing industry?

Rules are not ironclad. They are guidelines and can be broken. I do think you need to know the rules, but that doesn’t mean you can’t break them when needed.

That is wonderful to know from an unpublished author.

What do you want your readers to take away from your novel?

To trust in the Lord and have hope. He is with us. Also another big theme I often write about is forgiveness. It isn’t easy, but it sure makes life easier in the long ran for everyone when we can forgive others and, for that matter, ourselves.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

Telling a good story that entertains others. I love putting a story together—like a big puzzle that the pieces only fit one way. Boy, when I finish and it all fits together, that’s the best feeling.

Where can readers find you on the Web?

They can find me at http://www.margaretdaley.com/.
I also participate in several blogs: http://margaretdaley.blogspot.com/, http://craftieladiesofromance.blogspot.com/, http://ladiesofsuspense.blogspot.com/ and http://www.loveinspiredauthors.com/.

Darby pointed out that I didn't have a "silly question" so here it is:

If you could invite a past historical figure to lunch who would you invite? Why?

I would invite Jane Austen and. I love her writing and wouldn't it just be so cool to sit and chat with her. I would love to hear everything she had to say about writing and her life.

Be sure to answer the question to enter the contest.

Spotlight shines on Jill Eileen Smith and a free book.

Jill has graciously offered one of her books to a lucky reader so be sure to follow the instructions at the bottom of this post to be included. This giveaway is part of Book Blog Carnival

Jill Eileen Smith has been writing for over twenty years. Her experience includes articles and one published novel, although she has several under contract. Her research on David's wives has taken her from the Bible to Israel. She says "Put succinctly, I’m a wife, mom, novelist, cat owner, aspiring Bible scholar, lover of history, musician, dark chocolate connoisseur, and first and foremost a follower of Jesus. "

I have to confess, I am not one who really reads the Old Testament very often. I know I am missing some great wisdom. I love that there are authors out their like Smith who are tackling the retelling of these stories. I know after reading this and Havah by Tosca Lee and Michal it has led me to delve into the Old Testament.
What is your novel about?

The daughter of King Saul, Michal lives a life of privilege-but one that is haunted by her father's unpredictable moods and competition from her beautiful older sister. As a girl, Michal quickly falls for the young handsome harpist David. But soon after their romance begins, David must flee for his life, leaving Michal at her father's mercy in the prison that is King Saul's palace. Will Michal ever be reunited with David? Or is she doomed to remain separate from him forever?

What do you want your readers to take away from your novel?

I want readers to see Michal as a woman who learned the hard way that our lives are in God’s hands, that He loves us even when we think everything is going wrong and everyone is out to get us. I pray her story gives hope to women who live with challenging circumstances and wonder if they’ll make it through. Most of all, I want my readers to see that each one of us has to come to God in complete surrender of our wills to His. Peace with Him won’t happen apart from repentance.

Beside salvation, what is the best gift you have ever received?
My husband and my children.

Who is the most important influence in your life besides God?

My husband and my children – I know it’s the same answer as above, but my guys shape my world. I thank God for them.

Let’s pretend money is not a factor, if you could go anywhere is the world where would you go?

I would go back to Israel and live there for a while. I would explore from Dan to Beersheba (the Bible’s way of saying the whole land God promised to the people of Israel.) I would learn the Hebrew language and spend time on an archaeological dig and walk where Jesus and David and Abraham walked, but only if my husband were with me and we had a great tour guide. (It would be no fun alone.) Such a trip would be amazing!

What book are you reading now? What books are found lying around your home?
I’m finishing Ginny (Virginia) Smith’s Stuck in the Middle. Enjoyable story – poignant and touching moments with some great insight. Reminds me of some of the things I’ve experienced.

What books can you find around my house? LOL! There are book shelves in every room in my house – minus the bathrooms. We have shelves of reference books, commentaries, Bible encyclopedias and dictionaries, books on writing and on theological issues, books on web and graphic design, health issues, and tons of fiction – mostly Christian fiction. Books I have recently read and loved are: My Sister Dilly by Maureen Lang, The Apothecary’s Daughter by Julie Klassen, and Demon: A Memoir by Tosca Lee.

What is your favorite children’s book?
The series Stories Jesus Told by Nick Butterworth and Mick Inkpen – especially The Little Gate. They’re out of print but I’ve saved my copies for grandchildren someday. LOVE the artwork and the writing is great too!

What do you find most challenging about writing?
Getting the first draft down.
What do you find most rewarding?

Polishing each scene, rereading it over and over again until it flows smoothly.

Tell us a little about your road to publication?

The short version is that it was a 20-year journey with a lot of dips in the road. Rejection in any form hurts, but I was just stubborn enough to keep going, keep trying, until about six months before my first sale. I almost quit. I was truly at the end of all I could do and wasn’t sure I could continue. My prayers put it all in God’s hands with some specific requests for direction. God met those requests and answered beyond what I had imagined.

What are you working on next?
Bathsheba’s story is in the works. Abigail is on my editor’s desk. When I finish The Wives of King David, I will begin work on The Wives of the Patriarchs – first planned book is about Sarai.

What would you like your readers to say about your writing?
Well, I hope they like it! Positive comments are always welcome! J

What is your favorite verse from the Bible? Why?
My favorite verse changes periodically. I have way too many favorites to pick one and stick to it. It really depends on my need at the time. God’s Word is my greatest comfort.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors?
Write what you love, not what you know. Learn the craft well because competition is steep. Don’t write strictly in the hopes of being published. And surrender your desires for success of any kind to the Lord. His will is not ours, His timing is perfect, and we will be happiest when we’re walking with Him wherever He leads.

Spotlight falls on DiAnn Mills

I am so excited to share an interview with one of my very favorite authors DiAnn Mills. I have attended conference where she is teaching and let me just say she is incredible. She is a Texas gal which is always a plus in my book so with out further delay let's learn a little more about Diann Mills and her newest book Breach of Trust.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a novelist who loves to write! And I consider myself blessed to be able to write as my chosen career. I launched my career in 1998 with my first publication. Currently I have over 40 books in print.

My readers deserve to “Expect an Adventure.” That expectation helps me to create unforgettable characters in action-packed novels. That action can be emotional, physical, mental, or spiritual.

Six of my books have appeared on the CBA Best Seller List. Three of my books have won the distinction of Best Historical of the Year by Heartsong Presents. Five have won placements through American Christian Fiction Writer’s Book of the Year Awards 2003 – 2008, and I was the recipient of the Inspirational Reader’s Choice award for 2005 and 2007. And a Christy Awards finalist in 2008.

I’m a founding board member for American Christian Fiction Writers, a member of Inspirational Writers Alive, Romance Writers of America’s Faith, Hope and Love, and Advanced Writers and Speakers Association. I speak to various groups and teach writing workshops around the country. And I’m a mentor for Jerry B. Jenkins Christian Writer’s Guild.

My husband and I live in sunny Houston, Texas. We four adult sons and are active members of Metropolitan Baptist Church. We have a beautiful two year old granddaughter and we will have a grandson in June. God is good!

My hobbies are cooking and gardening, and I love to hear from readers and writers.

Could you please tell us a little about Breach of Trust?

Paige Rogers is a former CIA agent who lost all she treasured seven years ago when her entire team was killed in a covert mission. She blames their leader—Daniel Keary—whom Paige believes betrayed them. Disillusioned and afraid for her life, she disappeared and started a new life as a small-town librarian. But when Keary announces his candidacy for governor of her state, he comes after Paige to ensure that she won’t ruin his bid for office. He threatens everything she holds dear, and Paige must choose between the life of hiding that has become her refuge . . . or risking everything in one last, desperate attempt to right old wrongs.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done?
I suppose that would be a trip to Southern Sudan – by myself. I am very passionate about the plight of the Sudanese, and when the opportunity came to research for a novel, I grabbed my backpack and sunscreen and off I went!

WOW, I think that is really brave of you.

Beside salvation, what is the best gift you have ever received?

My husband!

Who is the most important influence in your life besides God?

Again I would say my husband. He’s my best cheerleader and my worst critic. J He also handles the busy side of writing for me. We’re a great team.

I hope he knows how much you appreciate him and his love and encouragement.

Let’s pretend money is not a factor, if you could go anywhere is the world where would you go?

The holy lands. I’d walk where Jesus walked. Just the idea of experiencing Israel and the places of the Bible is exciting and emotional.

Okay they say you can learn a lot about what a person reads so tell us what book are you reading now? What books are found lying around your home?
I’m currently reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

What is your favorite children’s book? Memoirs of a London Doll. This was the first book that I ever purchased as a child, and I bought it at a used book store for .10. I told my husband about how I loved that little book, and he found it for me on ebay. The copyright is 1922 – or something like that.

I don't think I have ever read Memoirs of a London Doll.

What do you find most challenging about writing?
The same thing that I find most appealing – characterization. I use psychology books and personality testing and people observation—anything I can think of to get closer to my characters.

I went to a writing conference where you were teaching characterization. I learned so much in that hour about the craft. I would highly recommend writers attend any conference where DiAnn is teaching.

What do you find most rewarding?
The finished book. When I know it is the best I can do.

Tell us a little about your road to publication?
In 1996, my husband said to me: “Stop telling me that someday you are going to write a book. Do it. Quit your job, and I’ll give you a year to get anything published.” I’m rather stubborn and the challenge was just what I needed to begin my writing ministry.

He sounds so much like my own husband. I heard those words not too long ago.

What are you working on next?
Two books: 3rd book in the Call of Duty Series, and a historical novel set in the Rockies.

If your book was being discussed at a book club what do you think the focus of the discussion would be on?

Hopefully the characters and the unpredictable aspect of the plot.

I always am trying to learn new ways to be organized in the office, what is your favorite organizational tool?

Excel Spreadsheet. Keeps me honest and organized.

What would you like your readers to say about your writing? Unpredictable!!!

What is your favorite verse from the Bible? Why?

Jeremiah 20:9. But if I say, "I will not mention him or speak any more in his name," his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.

This verse is my mission verse, the purpose for my ministry. I cannot not write anymore than I cannot not talk about Jesus.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors?
Write everyday
Read the books from the genre you want to write
Read the books about writing
Participate in writing conferences
Participate in writing groups
Pray!

What do you want your readers to take away from your novel? A character solved his/her problem by reacting and responding according to faith and truth.

DiAnn,thanks so much for stopping by Write By Faith. I loved having you visit. Where can readers find you on the Web?

Spotlight shines on Sharon Lathan

I have loved Pride and Prejudice so when the opportunity came to read a story that started after the wedding I jumped at it. I'll post my review later. I also got the opportunity to interview the author Sharon Lathan. I want to thank her for coming on the Write by Faith blog.

Could you please tell us a little about yourself?
Of course! But first allow me to take a moment and thank Donna for giving me the opportunity to visit with her readers. It is an honor to be here. I love that Donna states she is an ‘ordinary woman.’ I claim the same thing in all my bios. I like being ordinary, or average as I sometimes put it, in a world that ofttimes pushes women to be something beyond. I am thrilled to be first and foremost a wife of over 23 years and a mother of two (my daughter is 21 and my son 16). Additionally, God has blessed me with a vocation; a calling since I was very young, and that is to be a nurse. For 25 years I have been granted the joy of ministering to sick newborns in the NICU setting, aiding families through the difficulties, and discovering personal fulfillment from the challenges therein. I never asked for anything more than to be a beloved wife, appreciated parent (Proverbs 31 anyone?!), and an excellent nurse. But God, in His infinite desire to bestow gifts upon us, has further blessed me with a storytelling talent I had no clue I possessed. Isn’t He amazing?
You make ordinary sound so wonderful!!

What is the craziest thing you have ever done?
Crazy and Sharon Lathan really do not go together at all. What daredevil instincts I ever possessed have dissipated with adulthood. When I was young, growing up in the mountains, I was quite the tomboy. Very little frightened me or gave me pause. Hmm…maybe I should think on that a bit! LOL! Not sure what happened to me, but somewhere along the line timidity and extreme caution became the norm.
I know what you mean. As a kiddo I was a dare devil too. I think it has something to do with growing up and knowing it hurts to fall.

What made you want to write fan fiction?
Strangely enough, I did not think about it as writing ‘fan fiction’ per se. Obviously my novels are fan fiction, in the strictest definition of the phrase, but I was merely desiring to tell a story of happily-ever-after and committed love. The dreams and after-stories that would dance through my brain upon reading or watching an intriguing story was a common phenomenon all my life. The pre-existence of Jane Austen fan fiction gave me the place to share my first attempts in writing those visions into something coherent. The love story of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet was my inspiration. As with other ideas that have occurred to me from time to time, it was being touched by something profound and beautiful that opened the door. It was the yearning to elaborate upon their relationship, and keep the warm sentiments going that truly set me on this path.

Could you please tell us a little about your journey in completing Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy?
Fun, but also convoluted. And frequently tear-inducing! Writing about these characters is effortless. Too bad getting their story out into the real world for readers to enjoy is not so painless. The full tale – and believe me, it is a tale – can be read about on my website. I self-published first, after posting the chapters for over a year on my own website. Self-publishing was a surprisingly successful venture, but it is certainly a tremendous improvement to have a publishing company that embraces and esteems authors. Sourcebooks is an incredible company and I am extremely happy. They, more than anyone else out there, value the Austen writing community, but also see beyond the Austen-crazy-marketplace and respect the literary achievements of novelists like me.

What did you find most challenging in writing this novel?
Initially it was finding the balance between creating characters that were my own ideals while also holding true to what Miss Austen wrote. It was imperative to me to present Lizzy, Darcy, and all the others as how I imagined them to be. After all, this is my story now, and these characters are growing and evolving as we all do when life progresses and events alter us. Nevertheless, Austen created them, and I have never taken that for granted or shoved it aside. Realizing that I was never going to please everyone and myself at the same time was tough, but eventually I learned to accept the reality of how it has to be for every person who tackles fan fiction.
I can see how that would be extremely difficult.

Secondly it was the research. Studying history itself is natural for me as I love it and am a scholar at heart. But I quickly realized the importance of getting every nuance, historical fact, geographical locale, clothing item, servant duty, and so on precisely right. It hasn’t always been easy, but I have worked tremendously hard to showcase the Regency world. In fact, I consider the backdrop of Georgian England with all its details as much a star character of my saga as the people who populate it!

What do you hope readers take away from Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy?
Hope, belief, and faith that true love can be found and that marriage can be a wonderful, blessed relationship to possess. I never set out to make Lizzy and Darcy miserable. I wanted to give them what I imagined Jane planned for them: happiness. The subtitle is “Two Shall Become One” and should be a huge clue as to what my beliefs are.

I want young ladies to set their goals higher, thus waiting for the man who will cherish them as they should be cherished. I want to restore faith in others who are weary of the search for ‘Mr. Right.’ I want to show women how a decent relationship can be, if both parties strive for it and place the other person first. And yes, I wanted to show two people who are completely committed, crazy in love, and sexually fulfilled so that readers can aim for the same!

But mostly, I just want the reader to have a good time. This is a book you can curl up with, tea and chocolates near at hand, and know will feel happy while reading.

If your novel was being discussed in a book club what do you think most of the discussion would center on?
Depends on the group! An Austen Book Club would spend the whole time arguing over whether I ‘got it right’ or should have touched it in the first place – no one agreeing. LOL! A general, book loving group would hopefully discuss the relationship I have built between Darcy and Lizzy, talk about the attention to detail and accuracy, and the sheer joy in reading a novel that is not traumatic or heart-breaking. My primary goal has always been to weave a tale that is entertaining to read, puts a smile on one’s face, can be read over and over, and makes you long for more.

What book are you reading now? What books are found lying around your home?
I am reading some of the romances written by my fellow Sourcebooks Casablanca authors, gradually learning to appreciate the romance genre. But my heart is forever enamored with fantasy, sci-fi, and historical fiction. I have everything from an entire JRR Tolkien collection to some Stephen King, Robert Ludlum, CS Lewis, Stephenie Meyer, Victoria Holt, and so on. Quite eclectic!

What are your pet peeves in the writing industry?
Too often the author seems to be secondary, if not even a bother. Whether it is acquiring an agent, dealing with the publishing process, or withstanding the reviews, there is too often, IMHO, a sense of the writer as being, if not superfluous, at least a nuisance that is barely endured! It is horribly difficult to break into the industry and get your book published. Granted, not all books published are prize-winning or extraordinary, but the writer did put their heart and blood into it, usually with only the desire to please the reader in some way. So I am still scratching my head at the need to break them down, shatter their chances at success, and destroy their creativity. I have read a wealth of amazing books in my life, and I now know what the author went through to get their words out there. Thank God someone believed in them! But I can’t help but wonder how many masterpieces never saw the light of day because of the difficulties, arrogance, and downright nastiness that pervades the industry.
It is an extremely tough business. Breaking in seems to me like the hardest part.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors?
Persevere. Be tough. Know who you are and what you are trying to say in your writing. Don’t let anyone tell you how to write what is in your head! I am not referring to honest, well-meaning critique here. Writer’s groups and friends who Beta-read is one thing and can be very helpful. But you know who your characters are and what they should or should not do. You know the story you are trying to tell. Keep at it and remember that you are the storyteller!
I think perseverance is one of the hardest things to learn. That is great advice.

Thanks again Donna. I pray my passion for the Darcys has come through. Of course I have so much more to share with your readers about my series. I encourage anyone remotely intrigued to pop over to my website: http://www.darcysaga.net/ The Darcy Saga is comprised of 3 books (so far). “Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy ~ Two Shall Become One” is available now and is only the beginning of the life and adventures I have created for these characters. After all, life never has an end, does it?
What readers might want to know: This is not a Christian Fiction book and does include sex

Spotlight shines on S. Dionne Moore

If you have not read S. Dionne Moore's novel you are missing out on some wonderfully written humor. I read her first debut novel Murder on the Ol' Bunions and laughed through the book. It is refreshing and fun. I would love to share a little of her with the readers on this blog. I think you will really enjoy meeting her. She has also offered to give away a copy of her newest novel. All you have to do is leave a comment at the end of this post and be sure to leave a way for her to contact you.

Tell us a little about yourself :

I’m the youngest of three girls, and I don’t ever let my sisters forget it! I grew up in Northern Virginia, moving away for the first time in my life after being married for three years. I’ve come to love the hills of PA countryside where we just finished building our new home that includes a wood burning fireplace--a wonderful treat!

What is your novel about:

Polly Dent Loses Grip on the treadmill and takes a fatal spill that’s ruled an accident. Helping her mother-in-law move into Bridgeton Towers Assisted Living, but the scars from LaTisha Barnhart’s surgically removed bunions tell her something’s afoot. The residents’ gossip is revealing all kinds of motives for murder. Gertrude Herrman is out looking for love in the form of Thomas Philcher’s fat wallet, and Polly’s fall eliminates her competition once and for all. Otis Payne, the venerable director of Bridgeton Towers, is over a barrel when his wife demands cash, or she’ll carry on without him. Mitzi Mullins’s penchant for rhyme puts her in direct line as perpetrator of the crime, and Sue Mie’s mistake seals Polly’s fate.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done? Write a book about an African-American woman who has had seven children and is married to a most wonderful, and very patient, man.

Let’s pretend money is not a factor, if you could go anywhere is the world where would you go? The Mediterranean. For days. Weeks even. I might not even come home again.

What book are you reading now? What books are found lying around your home? I just finished Melody Carlson’s Just Another Girl to review for Novel Reviews. Which reminds me that I need to send in my review! Before that I read The Red Siren by Marylu Tyndall for review. Usually I have an eclectic mix of books in my to-read pile.

I always am trying to learn new ways to be organized in the office, what is your favorite organizational tool?
Stickies!!! My Macbook Pro has a little program called Stickies. I depend on those little yellow notes (virtual post-its) SO much while I’m working through the day. I don’t have to have a pad and paper ready, just my laptop and that wonderful program. Sorry, if you use Windows, you’re truly suffering.

What would you like your readers to say about your writing?
I’d love to hear how much fun LaTisha and Hardy are and how well they blend. I would love to hear that the mystery kept them baffled to the end, but that the entire story was enormously satisfying and funny.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors?
This is a tough question. There are so many things to say, but seldom is advice followed. I’ve found that most have to discover for themselves why the advice was right before they’ll actively put it to use. But, for the sake of this interview, I’ll give my list.
a. Learn to accept criticism and apply it.
b. Writers write.
c. Writing is rewriting. Get used to it.

What do you want your readers to take away from your novel?
The important theme for the entire LaTisha Barnhart Mystery series is showing two people who have been married for a long time because they chose to blend their very different personalities rather than cite irreconcilable differences. Marriage is too important to leave to chance. Be ready to be selfless before you say I Do.

If you would like to win a copy of Polly Dent Loses Grip leave a comment with you name and an email addy to contact you.
Of course you can always earn an extra entry by:

Spotlight shines on Donald Parker

I would like to introduce Donald Parker he has written several books and is a member of ACFW. After working for 25 years in IT work he got the bug to write and it has not stopped since. Without further delay let's get to know more about Donald Parker.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done?
Flew half way round the world to get married to someone I had never met in person and who spoke very little English.

Wow that is pretty crazy!

What is the best gift you have given?

Blood. I've donated more than 22 gallons over my lifetime. Hopefully that sacrifice has had has an impact on some lives.
That is an amazing gift. One that saves so many people.

Who is the most important influence in your life besides God?

Right now it is my new pastor. I've only been fellowshipping at his church for a month and my life has already been altered because of him.

Let’s pretend money is not a factor, if you could go anywhere is the world where would you go?
I'd love to get away to a beautiful lake where I could pull in fish as fast as I could bait my hook. My next choice would be an annual trip to the Mt. Hermon Writer's Conference.
I am with you about the conference.

What book are you reading now? What books are found lying around your home?

I never have a book in progress. Usually five is the minimum. Right now, I am reading three books about evolution, one about atheism, a book of short stories named Forever Friends which contains my first published short story, a couple of Christian apologetics books. Also I'm reading the manuscript for a book I'm going to publish at Sword of the Spirit Publishing. I only read fiction written by my friends at this point. I just finished Havah by Tosca Lee and It's Not About Me by Michelle Sutton.
I loved Havah and It's not about Me. Two wonderful books.

What is your favorite children’s book? Where the Red Fern Grows
If your book was being discussed at a book club what do you think the focus of the discussion would be on? The characters and the theological questions posed by the characters search for the truth.

I love old black and white movies and the old musicals. What is your all time favorite movie? It used to be It's A Wonderful Life. I think another Black and White by Frank Capra called Mr. Smith Goes to Washington might be my new favorite. Short Circuit is up there too.
What would you like your readers to say about your writing? God is speaking through his novels.

What are your dreams of 2009? What do you hope to accomplish this year? I try not to have personal dreams. God's goals are my goals. I have about twenty plots waiting to be developed into a book or a script which I'd love to start knocking out. So, Lord willing and the tributary doesn't ascend, I'd finish three more books this year. All three are in various stages of incompletion.

My ultimate goal is to get involved in television and movies. My style of writing lends itself better to spoken dialogue, and the current preference of the society is to eschew the more work-intensive effort of reading in favor of the almost instant entertainment of video. If I can penetrate that arena, I’ll be able to reach more people with my messages.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not slaving over the computer creating another wonderful novel?
Before I starting writing I had some hobbies. Now I mostly fantasize about them in my books. I love to play tennis, jog, hike, watch college football, read, talk about deep subjects, cycle long distances (30 miles), fish, sing in a choir, act in dramas, participate in organizations such as Lions Club, Habitat for Humanity, etc, and donate blood.

What is your favorite verse from the Bible?
James 2:18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors?
If you're not bursting at the seams with the passion to write or have been given a directive from God to write - stay out of the fray. It's a jungle out there. The faint hearted will never succeed, and the frustration level is overwhelming. On the other hand, if either of the two necessary criteria are present, then never give up.

What do you want your readers to take away from your novel?
Godly wisdom. All of my books are written to promote understanding of God and his desires for his children, including truly living the abundant life. I try to make my books entertaining so that the lesson is served with the spices of humor and romance.
From Donald Parker's blog:
Jeremy has studied the theory of evolution and its inherent weaknesses. His conclusion is that the world itself is a testimony to the existence of a creator. He decides to throw himself into studying religion to find out if he can determine who that creator might be and what such a powerful entity desires of him. His motivation is strong due to his love for Maria, who introduced him to Christianity, but Jeremy won't sacrifice truth even for the love of his life. He must find satisfactory answers to all of his inquiries, in order to pave the way to a mutually dedicated relationship based on common ideals

Cynthia Hickey's Fudged Laced Felonies is in the spotlight!

I have had Cynthia Hickey on before but she has agreed to come on again and since I have two copies of her book Fudge Lace Felonies I am going to give one away. I promise it is a real treat especially if you like cozies. Check out how to enter at the end of this post and be sure to follow the instructions.

Cynthia, Please tell us a little about yourself.

I am the mother of seven! Three step-children, one birth child, and three adopted children. I have five grandchildren. My husband and I live in Arizona, surrounded by our children.I am an army brat having grown up in many parts of the United States and Germany with most of my childhood spent in the foothills of the Ozark mountains in Arkansas.I grew up in a family of story tellers. For years I sat around and listened to my grandmother or an aunt or uncle tell me stories of my family's history. As I grew, I learned some of the stories were true, while others were just that, stories.Story telling is in my blood. I can't imagine doing anything else. I have made up stories since I was a child.

WBF: I have to add that she is a gifted writer. She forgot to tell everyone that!!

Blurb For Fudged Laced Felonies:

Summer Meadows entered church on Sunday, not to find God, but to search for a killer. While transplanting the rosebush her church's handsome Sunday school teacher, Ethan Banning inadvertently killed, Summer and Ethan discover a hidden stash of diamonds, a rusty can full of cash, and a bloody gardening glove. This discovery sets Summer and her candy-making aunt on a search for a killer. As Summer gets close to the truth, not only of the theft, but of her true feelings for Ethan, the diamond thief hatches a plan to hush the feisty sleuth.Ethan's love for Summer stays buried beneath his teasing, waiting until God tells him it is time to declare his feelings. Meanwhile, Summer's quirky and daring resolve to solve the case has him acting in a heavy-handed manner in order to protect her, and almost pushes her away.

WBF: What is the craziest thing you have ever done?

Para sailing. The first time was off Catalina Island. I was terrified. Then, to see whether I'd do better the second time, I tried again in Maui. Still terrified. My knuckles hurt from the strain. But how beautiful the scenery from way up high.

WBF:What is your favorite children's book?

CH:My all time fav is The Black Stallion by Walter Farley. In the sixth grade we had to write to our favorite author. I received a photo and letter from the author that I still have to this day.

WBF:What would you like your readers to say about your writing?

CH:That they saw God, enjoyed the stories, and want to read more.

WBF: What do you enjoy doing when you are not slaving over the computer creating another wonderful novel?

CH: Spending time with family, reading, or playing the Sims (I know. I'm a nerd).

WBF: What is your favorite verse from the Bible?

CH: Philippians 4:13. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

WBF: What advice do you have for aspiring authors?

CH: Read what you like to write. Study the craft. Write, Write, Write. Pray, pray, pray.

WBF: What do you want your readers to take away from your novel?

CH: That God is in control. I struggle with this issue and it seems to always be the underlying theme of my stories.

Dont forget to check out her contest page!

Cynthia's Website and a great place to order her books already signed how cool is that.

If you would like to win a copy of Fudged Laced Felonies answer the Daily question and as always leave a way for me to contact you. If your email is not on your profile page please leave it in the comments disguised like writebyfaith[at]sbcglobal[dot]net.
